What is Manchurian Gravy
This is an Indo-Chinese-inspired gravy sauce. You’ll see Manchurian gravy within the recipes for chicken Manchurian, or veg Manchurian (deep-fried vegetable balls). This is the recipe for the sauce only since it’s so good and can be used for dipping, sauteeing, or basically anything you want to taste sweet and spicy.
Equipment You’ll Need
You don’t need any special equipment to make this sauce. I like to use these glass bowls to mix all the ingredients together and a basic whisk.
Recipe Highlights
So simple – All you do is whisk the ingredients together in a bowl and you’re done!
Full of flavor – The flavor profile is complex with sweet, spicy, and savory flavors all in one sauce.
Unique sauce – This is an Indo-Chinese-inspired sauce that you probably don’t use in your kitchen often, adding some variation to your meal plan!
How to Make Manchurian Gravy
This bold sauce is made using sweet and spicy flavors and works great with any chicken, meatball, or vegetarian dish. It’s so versatile and will add a unique spin to your dishes.

Manchurian Gravy Sauce Ingredients
- Avocado oil – You can also sub olive oil, but I prefer a tasteless oil since the flavors of the sauce are already quite powerful.
- Coconut aminos – this is a healthier alternative to soy sauce, but you can use either.
- Harissa paste – chili paste works too. Harissa has a robust flavor that I think you’ll love.
- Coconut sugar – since you’re using unsweetened ketchup, this gives the sauce a little sweetness while allowing you to control the sugar.
- Ketchup – no sugar added.
- Minced garlic – garlic adds a fragrant flavor to Manchurian gravy.
- Grated ginger – ginger provides a touch of sweetness to this sauce.
- Sea salt
- Black pepper
- Green onion – adding something fresh, like green onion, makes this sauce really stand out.
Step by Step Instructions (with photos)
Let’s not make this more complicated than it needs to be… whisk all the ingredients together in a bowl. Done.

How to Store Manchurian Sauce
Manchurian sauce can be stored either as part of a dish, like Manchurian Chicken or by itself to use at a later date. These are the storage instructions for storing by itself.
Refrigerator
Store your sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 7 days.
In a Pinch Ideas
This is an “in a pinch” style recipe by nature, but here are a couple tips to make it even faster.
- Use pre-minced garlic, or garlic paste
- Use ginger paste
Manchurian Gravy Tips

- Green onion last – Whisk all the ingredients together then add green onions last. This ensures all the wet ingredients are completely blended together.
- Let the sauce marinate – making the sauce and giving it about 30 minutes to let the flavors develop will give you the most flavorful end result.
How to Make Manchurian Gravy Healthier
- Oil – Using oils like coconut or avocado are healthier than vegetable oil or Crisco which oxidize when heated.
- Coconut aminos – With lower sodium and no need to worry about the high levels of glyphosate in the soy, coconut aminos are what we replace soy sauce with.
Serving Suggestions

Chicken Manchurian – Fried chicken with sauteed veggies tossed in Manchurian gravy. This is a one-skillet recipe that is delicious on a bed of rice.
Vegetable Manchurian – Deep-fried vegetable balls smothered in Manchurian sauce – also delicious in on a bed of rice!
Manchurian Pasta – Manchurian gravy adds such a nice complex flavor to basic pasta dishes. I would make the sauce as directed in this recipe, then thin it out with a can of crushed tomatoes. Toss with your favorite pasta dish and viola, Manchurian pasta!
