how to make chocolate covered graham crackers
Light and crispy graham crackers dunked into rich chocolate topped with your favorite toppings, or stuffed with creamy peanut butter, these chocolate-covered graham crackers are a crowd pleaser!
My recipe is the super-simplified version, eliminating any unnecessary steps like tempering or adding oil to the chocolate. Just melt chocolate, dip, top, and let the chocolate set! It’s really that simple.
Ingredients
- Graham crackers – I like to use whole wheat (makes me feel like these are just a bit healthier!).
- Dark chocolate chips – We use allergen free, dark chocolate chips. But your options are endless here! See the variation options I provide in the section below.
- Optional toppings – for mine, I used sea salt, coconut flakes, chopped walnuts, and stuffed with peanut butter. See tons of toppings ideas in the section below.
Instructions
- Prepare your graham crackers by breaking in half and placing on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Be sure to leave a little space between them so they don’t stick togehter once dipped in chocolate.
- You have two options for melting your chocolate. The preferred method is to use a double broiler, however, you could also put the chips in a microwave-safe bowl and microwave in 30 second incrememntsstirring in between.
- While your chocolate is melting, prepare your toppings by placing next to the graham crackers.
- Take the melted chocolate over by the baking sheet with graham cracker halves. Moving swiftly, drop a graham cracker in the chocolate and use 2 forks to cover the graham cracker in chocolate. The other fork can be used to help scrape excess chocolate off.
- While the chocolate is still wet, add your toppings. You’ll want to do this after each graham cracker has been dipped to ensure the chocolate is still quite wet.
- Let the chocolate set by either leaving out at room temperature for several hours, or placing in the refrigerator or freezer for 10-20 minutes until the chocolate has fully hardened.

Room temperature
Whether you are enjoying for yourself or gifting to a friend, you can store your chocolate-covered graham crackers at room temperature in an air-tight container for up to 3 days.
Note: If you keep your house above 72 degrees F you’ll want to keep these in the refrigerator or they’ll get soft.
Gift wrapping
If you’re gifting these, you can place them in a cookie tin separated by parchment or wax paper. Or you can place a couple in a cellophane bag tied with a cute ribbon.
Refrigerator
If you keep a particularly warm house (above 72 degrees F) you’ll want to store these in the refrigerator. These keep well in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
If you want to enjoy your chocolate-covered graham crackers while they’re warm, simply remove them from the refrigerator about 30 minutes before eating.
Freezer
If you’re a frozen chocolate lover, you’ll love these stored in the freezer! Store your chocolate-covered graham crackers in the freezer for up to 1 month.
Eat frozen or let thaw at room temperature for a couple of hours.
chocolate covered graham crackers Tips
- Parchment paper – Be sure to use parchment paper to line the baking sheet so your chocolate covered graham crackers don’t stick to the baking sheet. You could also use wax paper.
- Setting the chcocolate – Do let the chocolate completely set prior to enjoying! If not, your fingers will sink into the chocolate and you’ll have a total mess on your hands (literally).
- Spacing – Space the graham crackers about 2 inches apart just to leave yourself space to set them down after dipping in chocolate without them sticking to eachother.
- Two forks – The most difficult part of the process if getting the dipping technique down. It’s not too hard, but you do want to make sure you use two forks to quickly and efficiently cover the graham crackers in chocolate and remove.
- Thick vs. thin chocolate – The thickness of the chocolate on your graham cracker is totally up to you. The recipe calls for 16 oz of chocolate which will give you some thick chocolate covered grahams and some thin. if you want all thick, increase the amount of chocolate.
- Top immediately – If you’re using toppings (and I suggest you do!) you’ll want to top your grahams after each one has been covered so they stick well to the chcocolate before it starts to set.
Serving Suggestions
Leveled up S’mores – Use chocolate-covered graham crackers to make S’mores while you’re fireside! The chocolate will melt with the hot marshmallow, but that’s the fun part!
Gifting – These are the perfect gift! You can even make them holiday-themed with white chocolate and crushed peppermint. Place them in a cute cookie tin, or little baggies tied up with a bow.
Holiday gathering – These graham crackers are so perfect to set out on the cookie table at a holiday gathering.
Snack – Simply have these as a sweet mid-day treat!
