What are Boobie Balls?
Boobie balls are lactation bites, similar to bliss balls, only these are packed with something called “galactagogues” which are foods that increase milk supply.
Equipment You’ll Need
All you need for this super easy boobie balls recipe is a bowl and a spoon to mix.
Recipe Highlights
- No special equipment needed
- Easy and quick recipe
- Delicious and easy snack
- Easy to eat while nursing
- Can increase milk supply
How to Make Boobie Balls
These boobie balls are rich and chocolatey with the creamy flavors of peanut butter. The nutrients from the oats, nuts and seeds will help to boost your milk supply as well as nourish your body during those round-the-clock nursing sessions.
Boobie Ball Ingredients
- Creamy peanut butter – get the no-sugar-added kind and make sure it’s pretty runny.
- Pure maple syrup – get the good stuff for a really rich flavor.
- Vanilla extract – I use vanilla bean paste instead of extract, but use whatever you have on hand.
- Cacao powder not cocoa, unless that’s all you have on hand. You can get cacao powder here – healthier and more nutrient-dense than cocoa powder.
- Brewers yeast – this is one of the big milk producers of this recipe!
- Ground flax seed – another great milk producer!
- Chocolate chips – a little treat for mama.
- Organic Sprouted oats – rolled oats work fine too but sprouted are better digested since we aren’t soaking the oats in this recipe.
- Coconut flakes – unsweetened is the way to go!
- Super seed blend chia, hemp and pepita seed mixture – I get mine here from Amazon
Step by Step Instructions (with photos)
Pour the maple syrup, vanilla extract and peanut butter in a large bowl and stir until combined.
Add the cacao powder, brewers yeast and ground flax to the mixture and stir to combine.
Then add your coconut flakes, super seed blend, oats and chocolate chips and stir until it’s all well combined.
Refrigerate the mixture for 30 minutes.
Take a piece of the mixture and roll into desired size balls.
Roll the balls into shredded coconut and enjoy!
How to Store Boobie Balls
Storing boobie balls is so easy and makes for a quick snack on the go, or while nursing your sweet baby.
Refrigerator
Store the boobie balls in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. If you have to layer the balls on top of each other, separate them by a piece of parchment or wax paper.
Freezer
Freeze boobie balls in a plastic bag for up to 3 months. Remove from the freezer and defrost at room temperature for an hour then enjoy.
In a Pinch Ideas
My favorite in a pinch tip for making boobie balls is to use gloves while rolling the balls to make for easy clean up! Other than that, if you don’t have one of the ingredients, it can likely be substituted for something else (see ideas in the section below).
Boobie Balls Tips
Boobie balls are truly so easy to make, however, there are a couple tricks to make the job even simpler.
- Do refrigerate the mixture prior to rolling into balls. Your boobie balls will turn out prettier and it will make your life much easier when rolling.
- Wearing gloves helps. I love wearing gloves when rolling the boobie balls so my hands don’t get sticky and the balls turn out more uniform.
- Be sure to follow the mixing order in the instructions – this ensures all the ingredients are well-combined and there are no clumps (nobody wants a taste of clumped-up brewer’s yeast – ick!).
How do Boobie Balls Increase Milk Supply
The ingredients I call for in this recipe are very strategic – they are either amazing galactagogues (increasing milk supply) or they help to mask the flavor of brewer’s yeast and add to the delicious flavor of the balls.
- Oats are a galactagogue that contains fiber and iron and helps to stabilize blood sugar levels as well as support the immune system and the lactation hormones, improving your flow.
- Brewers yeast – This galactagogue contains iron, folic acid, and protein and for that reason is one of the most popular ingredients to increase milk supply.
- Ground flax seeds – Aside from being a galactagogue, flax seeds contain healthy fats, fiber, and antioxidants.
- Peanut butter – This protein-packed ingredient is great to sustain your calorie-burning body while nursing, but also does a great job of masking the bitter taste of brewer’s yeast.
- Super seeds – Chia, hemp, and pepitas are all seeds packed with nutrition important for nursing mothers such as fiber, antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, iron, and calcium.
How to Make Boobie Balls Healthier
Boobie balls are made with nutritionally packed ingredients and are already quite healthy. See the list below on how you can make them even healthier.
- Use sprouted oats – Sprouted oats are more easily digestible than regular rolled oats, especially since we aren’t soaking the oats in this recipe.
- No-sugar-added – when it comes to the coconut flakes, peanut butter and maple syrup you use, be sure there is no sugar added for each ingredient. The peanut butter should just contain peanuts and sea salt, the maple syrup should be pure maple syrup and coconut flakes with no added sugars.
- Use organic ingredients – Organic matters, particularly for the oats in these boobie balls. Oats are heavily sprayed by glyphosate and should always be purchased organic to avoid those toxic chemicals.
Boobie Balls Substitutions and Types
- Swap peanut butter for any other type of nut butter.
- Swap chocolate chips for dried fruit of your preference (or another type of chocolate).
- Instead of coconut flakes, use crushed almonds, walnuts or pecans.
- Replace the super seed blend with the same amount of any other type of nut or seed of your preference.
*To ensure you still get the lactation benefits of these boobie balls, be sure to not sub out the brewer’s yeast, oats, or ground flax seeds as those are the main galactagogues in this recipe.
